Diagnostic Tests

The doctors at First Eye Care Downtown Dallas have a wide variety of advanced equipment available to perform tests to evaluate the health and wellness of your eyes. The is a list of the most common tests with a short description of each.

Snellen Chart
- Visual Acuity Testing
- The Snellen Chart (the chart with the big E at the top) is used to test each eye for visual acuity or “sharpness” at a distance. A smaller, hand-held chart is used to test short vision.
- Fundus Photography
- A special non-invasive examination technique in which photographs are made of the internal structures of the eye.
- Corneal Topography
- An examination technique that allows us to analyze the physical features and shape of the anterior surface of the cornea.
- Retinal Scanning Lasers
- A procedure that uses a low-energy laser to image the structure of the retinal layers and optic nerve.
- Slit Lamp Testing
- This piece of vision testing equipment combines a simple chin rest with a light source that produces a “slit” of light that’s used to scan your eye. Your doctor (with the help of special viewing lenses) can look into the internal structure of your eye to potentially diagnose a host of eye problems and diseases.
- Phoropters
- Phoropters are machines that allow your eyecare professional to “switch” lenses during your exam to see if your focus is better, or worse.
- External Ocular Photography
- A non-invasive procedure in which photographs are used to document conditions of the external structures of the eye.
- Specular Microscopy
- A special photographic technique that is used to evaluate the structure and function of the corneal endothelium, the single layer of cells on the inner surface of the cornea.
- Refraction
- A test that determines the optical power of the eye and measures the combined function of the retina, optic nerve and visual pathways in the brain.
- B-Scan Ophthalmic Ultrasound
A non-invasive diagnostic procedure that uses ultrasound to create a two-dimensional image of the interior structures of the eye. - Visual Field Examination
- A test that measures the combined function of the retina, optic nerve and visual pathways in the brain.
- Visual Evoked Potential Testing
A neurophysiologic test that measures the combined function of the retina, optic nerve and visual pathways in the brain - Optomap Retinal Exam
- OPTOS laser imaging technology is used for the early detection of retinal disease.
- RAPDx Expanded Pupil Examination
RAPDx is a new diagnostic instrument that identifies relative afferent pupillary defects. - Anterior Segment Imaging
- A non-invasive procedure that uses a low-powered laser to image the cornea, iris and anterior chamber of the eye.
- Extended Ophthalmoscopy
- An ophthalmoscopy technique that is used when a detailed examination of the retina is required.
- Corneal Pachymetry
- Corneal pachymetry is the measurement of corneal thickness.
- The “Puffer” Test
- A light is beamed into your eye while a gentle puff of air is blown across the eye’s surface. A special machine measures the resistance of the eye to the puff of air, and then calculates internal eye pressure.
